Hydrology is a discipline that focuses on studying the characteristics, circulation, and distribution of surface water and groundwater, and is an important branch of geology. The research objects of hydrology are extensive, including rivers, lakes, swamps, oceans, glaciers, snow cover, groundwater, atmospheric water and other water bodies, as well as the interactions and transformation processes between these water bodies.

The study of hydrology has a long history, and its origins can be traced back to ancient people's development and utilization of water resources. With the progress of society and the development of technology, hydrology has gradually become an independent discipline and formed its own research system and methodology. Modern hydrology not only focuses on the quantity and quality of water resources, but also delves into the physical mechanisms, spatiotemporal distribution, and interactions between various elements of the hydrological cycle, as well as the impact of human activities on the water environment.
